About this species

Distribution

Peregrine has an almost worldwide range from cold regions to the tropics. In Slovakia it is again a regular local breeder after historical decline and recovery. Adult pairs may remain year-round, with additional migrants and winter visitors. Its name therefore does not imply that every Slovak individual leaves for winter.

Habitat

It nests mainly on cliffs and in quarries, also using tall buildings and suitable artificial supports. Hunting takes place above open country, waters and towns. Safe nest sites and bird prey are essential.

Breeding

Eggs are laid in a shallow substrate scrape without a twig nest. The female incubates usually three or four eggs while the male provides food. Parents continue feeding young after first flights.

Food

It mainly catches birds in flight through steep stoops or direct pursuit; not every hunt involves the famous dive.

Interesting fact

Speed records concern specialised descending flight, not ordinary cruising. A dark facial mask, pointed wings and marked sexual size difference are more useful everyday identification features.
