About this species

Distribution

It inhabits much of Europe, Asia and Africa. In Slovakia it is among the commonest large waterbirds and can be seen throughout the year. It breeds in scattered colonies, is joined by moving birds on passage, and gathers around available food in winter. Not every wintering individual belongs to the local population.

Habitat

It occurs beside rivers, fishponds, gravel pits and even small streams. It often hunts in meadows and fields, particularly where small rodents are abundant. It can also adapt to urban surroundings if quiet resting places and suitable food are available.

Breeding

It builds a large stick nest in a colony, most often high in trees. Older nests may be reused and enlarged. Both parents incubate and feed the chicks, and breeding activity can begin early in spring.

Food

It catches fish, amphibians, small mammals and other animal prey, alternating long periods of motionless waiting with slow stalking and a rapid strike of the bill.

Interesting fact

In flight it folds its neck into an S shape, whereas storks hold theirs straight. The silhouette therefore often reveals a heron before plumage colour can be seen, even high overhead.
